Frequently asked questions
On this page we collect questions and answers to the things patients often ask the secretary or the clinic.
Can the assessment be done entirely on video?
The assessment itself can take place on video. But the National Board of Health requires attendance when starting medication. If you are subsequently stable, the psychiatrist can extend the medication via video call. But if there are any changes, attendance is required. For longer courses, attendance is required at least every three months.
When the treatment is stable, you will be discharged to your GP. This means that it is your own GP who is responsible for further treatment.
How long does it take for assessment, medication and termination?
Once the assessment starts, it usually takes a few weeks before medical treatment begins. It varies from person to person whether several medications and strengths of medication need to be tried. For most people, this can be done within the timeframe of a five-session assessment and treatment package. In some cases, additional sessions may be necessary.
Can I not drive when my ADHD medication has a red warning triangle?
Does the Danish Road Safety Agency have to approve my driving when I take ADHD medication?
No, only professional drivers need authorisation.
Is it possible to do an assessment for attention deficit disorder and possibly start medical treatment exclusively online?
In Denmark, the Danish Health and Medicines Authority requires that adults with ADHD/ADD are assessed by a specialist in psychiatry. A psychiatric assessment and treatment programme for ADHD/ADD consists of three phases:
- Assessment, testing and diagnosis, including assessment of other psychiatric conditions such as stress, anxiety, depression, personality disorder, autism, substance abuse and more. Typically 2-3 one-hour sessions.
- Initiation of medical treatment, including trialling 1-3 different medications.
Typically 3-5 times for 20-25 min - Follow-up on selected medical treatment and termination to the GP who will continue the treatment.
Typically 2-4 times of 15 min each
Phases 1+2+3 can be split up or completed as a single programme. Phase 1 and some of the control calls in phase 3 can be done by video or phone.
Because the Danish Health and Medicines Authority has categorised ADHD medication as group A medication (euphoriant), you must attend for a prescription to be issued. Patients from Jutland, Funen, Bornholm etc. have typically had 2 out of 5 consultations as attendance, but reservations are made for individual circumstances.
